Answer:

While some adults have suffered difficulty communicating since childhood, others may seek treatment following a medical event or diagnosis. Diagnoses may include, but are not limited to; stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), head/neck cancer, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, pneumonia, vocal cord nodules/polyps and multiple sclerosis (M.S.).

  • Speech: quality and clarity of verbalizations

    • Apraxia, Dysarthria, Lisp, Fluency Disorders (stuttering/cluttering)

  • Cognitive-Communication:

    • Memory, planning, organization, attention, problem solving

  • Voice: sound and quality of vocalizations

    • volume, pitch, and resonance

  • Swallowing: safety and efficiency of food/liquid intake

    • aspiration/choking precautions, swallowing exercises to improve oral/pharyngeal function

  • Language: expressive language (expressing thoughts and ideas) and receptive language (understanding others)

    • aphasia- Wernicke’s, Broca’s, Global, Anomia, Conduction, Transcortical Motor, Transcortical Sensory
